Assumption High School-Nairobi is an important part of the defense of dignity at the margins of society. Its students are rescued from dire circumstances of daily life in the slums and surrounding areas. In such places sexual exploitation – forced or coerced – at the hands of a family member is common. Sometimes it’s the price to pay for the privilege of foraging on the trash heaps. Kibera, one of the most notorious trash heap slums in the world, is home for many Assumption students.
Schools are seriously lacking in existence in the slums. Capable students are unable to receive an education due to lack of opportunity and funds. Assumption High School is a co-ed school founded and operated by the Augustinians of the Assumption on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.
Despite the challenges posed by poverty and lack of resources, the school continues to grow thanks to the diligent effort of the Assumptionists and the support of benefactors. Encumbered by the acceptance of students whose families are unable to support their education, additional financial giving is necessary to cover books, feeding, lodging, uniforms, medical attention when required, and other items pertaining to students.
AHS-Nairobi has been a place of “Education for Peace and Excellence” since its inaugural class began in 2017, “making all the difference in the world for its students and their communities.” This beacon of hope also needs of funds for development; staff and otherwise.
Construction and building maintenance are on-going. A well on the grounds of AHS-N supplying life-giving water for the students, the school itself, and the community was completed in September 2019. People who used to travel a hearty distance to get water can now do so locally. And those who purchased water from far-off sources can help support the school and assist the community. But the well and other infrastructure require on-going maintenance which are best addressed through monthly giving.
Most students are housed in the dormitories (still under construction) and require financial assistance to meet their most basic needs such as food, clothing, books and school supplies, etc. These needs are best met by our student sponsorship program.
