IAAM has been working in Costa Rica since the beginning. Our on-going projects address at-risk populations in order to shore up vulnerabilities among people in this beautiful country where there is great need.
In the early days we often heard comments like, “What are you doing there?” and “Why work with children there when there are orphans here?” in addition others. Education is important. In fact, it’s one of the ways in which we serve.
Therefore, on those occasions meant to decry the work of IAAM in Costa Rica we sought to educate. Our response usually pointed out – since we’re part of the problem, we can be part of the solution. This was in reference to the fact that men from the US were traveling to Costa Rica to visit the red-light district. And in some cases, “sex tourism” included sex with minors. Once, while considering the possibility of assisting in an adoption, it became clear to us we were meant to adopt the country.
IAAM-CR is a large project in and of itself. Dually registered as a non-profit organization in Costa Rica, we like to point out that there are “projects within the project.”
IAAM-CR works with men, women, and children. The projects and outreach programs in prisons, refugee neighborhoods, the red-light district, orphanages, mobile pregnancy help unit, and through soccer schools strengthen human frailty accompanying hunger, poverty, homelessness, lack of or inadequate education, and statelessness. IAAM-CR guards against the exploitation of vulnerability in a variety of human conditions.
The center of operation for IAAM-CR activity is in the city of Cartago situated in the province of Cartago. However, several of the project’s programs are located in other areas such as nearby San Jose.
We invite you to participate in IAAM-CR projects and outreach programs. Contact us if you’re interested in learning more.
