Pamlico County, North Carolina is tucked away in the Coastal Plain Region as part of the inner banks of North Carolina, “Where the Land and Sky Meet the Water.” The County gets its name from the Pamlico Sound which, in turn, was named for the Pamlico Indians. Fishing and farming are still the main industries and an important part of life in the County.
Pamlico County ranks second to last for median income in North Carolina. While one of its communities is touted as the “Sailing Capital of North Carolina” and good portions of waterfront continue to be developed for would-be buyers, others struggle amid real poverty. There are some who’ve yet to recover from hurricane Florence, others simply can’t afford any sort of homestead upkeep. Drug addiction is not uncommon.
IAAM’s home office has always been in Eastern North Carolina. Now, PamCo Missio houses IAAM administration and hosts projects including 306 Main Street and 1st Choice Pregnancy Resources of Pamlico.
PamCo Missio is also comprised of outreach programs such as food distribution and is the seat for all IAAM initiatives that go forth throughout the Mission worldwide. PamCo Missio includes the development of short-term mission to the area and is involved in building and reconstruction projects. Community collaboration, interfaith activities, and support for local parish work are hallmarks of this mission within the Mission. Lastly, PamCo Missio serves to provide rest and respite for missionaries.
Local missionaries work long hours amid some of the most wonderful people. They help others understand that domestic, local mission projects are no less “mission” than those overseas. IAAM works around the world and around the corner in the defense of dignity.
